Personal Branding Interview Ori Brafman - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Ori Brafman, who is just releasing his latest book called Click: The Magic of Instant Connections. Previously, I had interviewed Ori about his New York Times bestseller SWAY. In this interview, he talks about connecting with other people, what makes people click with others, forcing a connection, and more. How do you know when you click someone? Is it emotional? Yes, you know it on a visceral level. You feel like youve known this person forever, like you dont have to explain yourself or go through the motions. You can be completely yourself around that person. There is mutual interest and comfort. What makes certain people click and not others? Although there is no recipe to get someone to click with you, there are certain factors, or what I call accelerators that facilitate clicking. These are the willingness to be open and vulnerable by self-disclosing emotions and personal stories; being physically close to the other person (e.g. having your desk right next to theirs, being next door neighbors); sharing similarities (anything from favorite music to political views); being fully present and engaged with the other person; and being part of a framed community. Is it even possible to force yourself to click with someone else? Does it have to happen naturally? Trying to force a connection when the spark is not really there is akin to the desperate guy in the bar whos throwing one-liners at all the women, hoping one will stick. On the other hand, just letting nature take its course can mean being too passive. I think that a lot of times clicking is something that just happens serendipitously and were not even sure what we did or how it took place. Thats great when it happens on its own by we can also take some steps toward increasing the likelihood that well click with someone. Whether its focusing more on similarities, opening up, or literally moving ourselves closer to that person, these are some ways we can plant the seeds for a closer connection. Can you share one of the most fascinating pieces of research uncovered in your book that might surprise us? The power of similarity. Even little, seemingly insignificant similarities can make a big difference. When an undercover researcher wearing a name tag asked people to donate to a worthy cause, individuals donated an average of $1.00. But when the name tag was shifted so that the name tag reflected the donors own first name (e.g. If the persons name is Lisa then the researcher wore a name tag Lisa) the contributions doubled in value. Can you click with someone and then not click with them at another point down the road? Definitely. We can all remember times in our lives when we hit it off with someone and then, for whatever reason, either we lost touch or we got into an argument and things took a sour turn. Clicking doesnt guarantee a long-term relationship, but clicking relationships are different from their plain friend counterparts. Why the Cover Letter is Dead In offering some advice today to a family member who is job hunting, I came to the realization that the cover letter is all but dead. The family members query was how to write a compelling/ interesting cover letter because he was looking to find ways to get his resume noticed by the hiring managers. His inquiry wasnt a bad one he wanted his resume to stand out against the rest. It’s no secret that hiring/HR managers see hundreds of resumes per opening and only a small percentage of them ultimately get considered. So as such, candidates want their resumes to stand out and show how they are best for the position. As a result you type a letter in an attempt to set yourself apart from the other applicants. On top of the vast competition of applicants, there is also the resume itself. I have heard many reasons for resumes to be declined by hiring managers    anything from spelling errors  to poor formatting. Forget about whether you think you have the technical skills or not, the way your resume looks can determine your future employment opportunities.  All of these factors result in why so many people put such a high emphasis on the cover letter. Candidates realize the resume is your first impression. You are making an attempt at setting yourself apart and explaining why they should consider you. As such, the cover letter becomes that outlet to make that impression. We live in a social media world where 140 characters is the max attention our brain can offer. Consequently hiring managers would like to decide if you are a fit as quickly as possible. A study by The Ladders revealed that on average recruiters review resumes for about 6.25 seconds before determining if you are a fit. A cover letter unfortunately does not fit into this equation. While I am sure the candidate spent a good amount of time preparing what they would like to say, cover letters get skimmed over with little to no interest. The other issue adding to this is not personalizing cover letters. Too many times I have received a cover letter that looks like it has been copied, pasted and sent to roughly 15 different jobs without personalization. Nothing shows a lack of preparation more than this. I have been in the recruiting industry for close to 7 years. I do not have the exact numbers, but in that time I must have submitted thousands of candidates to my client’s requirements. And although I do not have the precise stats, I do know this much; of all the candidates to get hired by my clients through me, I have never submitted one with a cover letter. I send my clients a copy of the candidates resume and put together an email that highlights their experience and how it relates to the position. That is what I recommend to individuals who ask for advice when job hunting. It’s not enough to simply apply for a position in today’s society. You must get direct contact to separate yourself from the herd. That is the beauty of sites such as LinkedIn. In the past the hiring manager was a mysterious figure behind a job ad. Now you can pull up a posting on LinkedIn, and not only is the poster right there for you, there are even suggestions on how you could be connected with them. It is on you as a candidate to find that person and reach out to them. The recruiting and staffing industry is a multi-billion dollar business, because ultimately the hiring process is a personal experience. So rather than putting your effort into a cover letter, find that persons email address and put together a personalized message on why you are applying and a fit for the position. It doesnt have to be too long, just give the person a reason to spend more than 6.25 seconds on your resume.

We live in an age of startups where every other person with a half-decent idea is trying to become the new Mark Zuckerberg or Pierre Omidyar or Jeff Bezos. In many cases, startups do not have too much money to throw around, especially in their early days. Because of this, they have come to a solution where they offer stock options to new employees as a way of compensating them for the work they do. As someone looking for a job, you might have already encountered this, but did not know how to respond or what questions to ask. Since stock options are quite a complex issue, there is plenty to factor in and the questions you will find below are a great start. Without getting the right answers to these questions, it is probably best to avoid such an employer. Inquire about companys future Before anything else, you need to know that your potential employer has a clear and worked out plan to succeed. Any fool can have an idea and scrounge up some money to register as a C corporation. They need to convince you that the shares you will be granted will actually have value down the line. In order for this to happen, their startup needs to succeed. If they are being iffy with providing proof (analyses and projections), they are hiding something. Inquire about the percentages Do not get fooled by your employer simply stating the number of shares that you will be getting. The number means nothing. Only in relation to the overall number of shares does it make sense. Also, make sure to inquire about the percentage your stocks will be worth once the stocks are fully-diluted, meaning when everyone has had their share. It might also be a good idea to find out how long the option pool will be lasting and how much longer will the stocks keep being diluted. Inquire about future options Many companies continue to grant further stock options to employees who have proved their worth. Not all companies practice granting of additional options and it is always a good thing when your potential employer has a plan in place where they will provide additional options grants periodically. This is another indicator that they expect the company to perform well. Inquire about companys funding Youd think that the more money the company has raised, the better off you are. It indicates a strong company with bright future. Well, things are not that simple. When startups raise money from investors, those investors become owners of preferred stock. There are a number of different types of preferred stock, but in all cases, the holders of these stocks will be paid before you see any money in the case of an exit. Keep in mind that there can be a few rounds of investments, making your payout further and further away. Inquire about the exercise price You should never accept any stock options unless the employer is ready to define (in writing) the exercise price of your initial options. This should be part of your Stock Option Agreement, as well as the Offer Letter. Do not fall for the common trick where they tell you that exercise price will be later defined according to the companys fair market value down the road. Closing Word These are just some of the basic inquiries that you should make before you accept any stock options as way of compensation for your work. You should probably learn more about this by reading up on business articles and talking to professionals from the tax, accounting and legal fields.
